True Gentlemen’s Jerky or Of Men and Meat
When I — or most women — are in need of a snack, we reach for fruit, yogurt, a handful of granola, a cookie or some pretzels.
Men?
It’s meat. Always.
My husband could have had a burger for lunch and could be preparing a leg of lamb for dinner, yet if he gets the munchies, he’ll still crave a meat product of some sort.
That’s a little of the spirit behind True Gentlemen’s Jerky. It was founded by a group of guys who all went to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo together. In search of the perfect snack, they started making their own beef jerky based on a family recipe. Before long, a business was born.
True Gentlemen’s Jerky is made in the Sacramento area from Northern California beef. Recently, I had a chance to try samples.
The jerky comes in two varieties: Original Gentlemen Peppered and Sinsa Korean Flavored BBQ. The jerky comes packaged in bite-size strips, so you don’t have to gnaw off a big piece. Just one little strip alone is enough to generate a giant umami explosion in your mouth. The flavor is big with a pronounced beefiness. The Peppered variety has plenty of black pepper bite. It’s slightly sweet from agave nectar, brown sugar and soy sauce. The Korean version is sweeter with a roundness from nutty sesame seeds, ginger, and Korean pepper powder. The jerky is chewy, but not hard or tough on your molars.
A 1-ounce serving has 90 calories. The sodium level is 280mg for the Korean version and 470mg for the Peppered version. Saturated fat rings in at 0.5g to 1g.
The jerky comes in 2-ounce resealable pouches for $7.99 each. A sealed packet of dental floss is included in each one, too. Consider it a genteel touch from a true gentleman.
I grew up with Chinese jerky, which is always on the sweeter side and soft with just caramelized edges from the brown sugar. So that’s how I always judge jerky, whether it can be easy to chew or if it’s tough like leather. This looks a bit tougher than the Asian jerky, but that Korean flavor sounds intriguing!
Oooh, the Sinsa flavor sounds great. I don’t go out of my way to get jerky but I’ll totally eat it if it’s in the house!
Great looking jerky!
Quality jerky can be hard to find… this one looks like a winner! Nice touch with the dental floss. 😀
Oh! Actually my husband goes for cheese or dairy when he snacks but maybe because he is French? I am the one who is absolutely crazy for jerky yet can only get it when I am back in the US. Wow these sound fabulous!!
