A Fruity Jerky

Not your grandfather's jerky.

This is not your min-mart jerky.

Thank goodness.

When Wichita Falls, TX-based Jerky.com sent me a sample of its new “Pineapple Jerky,” I had horrifying visions of sinewy, jaw-breaking dried meat sheets doused in pineapple juice arriving on my doorstep.

What came in the mail was something all together different: Thin, dried rounds of actual pineapple. No meat was involved; only honey. And this “jerky” was actually pretty, almost resembling a dried flower.

This fruit jerky is made in Maui. It’s not cloying like dried pineapple chunks in so many trail mixes. Instead, it’s just sweet enough, making it a tasty pick-me-up. It’s pretty chewy, too, almost like a fruit roll-up. A 1-pound bag is available on the Web for $29.99.

Inquiring minds may want to know that the company makes the other kind of jerky, too.

  • How interesting! I would love to try it, I think my daughter would really like this too!

  • I had heard about this jerky but hadn’t seen it. Interesting! Good to know it’s less sweet than other dried pineapple.

  • I am totally addicted to the plain dried pineapple at Sigonia’s. Similar to what you show without the core or the honey dip. Tart, chewy, awesome pineapple. You’ll have to do a taste off and see which you like better.

  • Hmm, I don’t get why they call it jerky and not a dried pineapple. Do they do something different in the process that’s more jerky like? Since it’s dried, I imagine you get a lot in one pound, huh?

  • Ooh yum! I’ve seen this on other blogs and it looks incredible!

  • RYC on the photos: Thanks! Sorry the reply was so late.

My mom used to do that to super-thin slices of apples… wonder if it’s the same thing?

  • man, that looks darn goood! I love your description of it, that it’s like a dried flower. sounds really appealing to me! they should change the name to Pineapple flower!

  • I’d like to try it really seems a dried flower or a big mushroom ….but enough sweet and I guess a spicy touch at the end like the fresh pineapple!

    Cheers,

    Gera

  • “Dried meat sheets” [LOL]! Put in these terms, I wouldn’t be keen on having them land on my doorstep either. Thankfully, it would seem you had a pleasant surprise. And ‘flower’ was exactly my first thought when I saw the photo – hmmm, would “Dried Flower Jerky” have been more appealing?

  • Wow, it looks really tasty!

  • Marcella: Thanks for the great tip on Sigonia’s dried pineapple. I’ll have to pick up some to try the next time I’m in the neighborhood.

  • This “jerky” sounds delicious! Thanks for writing about it!

  • I say we put that $30 toward a plane ticket to Maui & just sit around in the sun eating fresh pineapple straight from the field!

It does look both beautiful and delicious. My vote would be to call it “dried pineapple flowers”

  • I like the candied pineapple and other fruits and veggies that you find around Chinese New Year time. I guess these would be a slightly healthier (albeit more expensive) version!

  • Oooh, that’s beautiful!
