Join yours truly as I host a Q&A with the legendary Pastry Chef Dominique Ansel at 6 p.m. Nov. 4 at Williams-Sonoma in Palo Alto’s Stanford Shopping Center.
Yes, the man who started the Cronut craze is coming to the Peninsula to sign copies of his new cookbook, “Dominique Ansel: The Secret Recipes” (Simon & Schuster).
Ansel, a James Beard Award winner, was classically trained in Paris and was formerly executive pastry chef at Daniel in New York.
He opened his eponymous bakery in New York in 2011. Since then, throngs have lined up each day before dawn, hoping to snag his irresistible mashup of a croissant and a doughnut. Or a Cookie Shot. Or a Waffle Affogato. Or another of his wildly whimsical concoctions.
His Williams-Sonoma appearance is a ticketed event. You must RSVP here. Price is $38.06, which includes a copy of the cookbook to take home, which Ansel will sign.
And before you ask; No, he won’t be bringing Cronuts with him. (Insert collective sigh.)
But I promise it’ll be one sweet time, nevertheless.

Referencing the mournful queries on your FB post, the ones at Jack & the Box bear NO resemblance to the real thing — in fact, they are a downright disgusting waste of calories IMO. However, if there’s a Paris Baguette bakery near you (as there is near me in Cupertino) I happen to know that on certain days, if the stars are aligned and the bakery gods are in good form…
Theirs may not be quite the same as the original (I can’t compare) but they are very wonderful in their own right.
Carroll: Thanks for the tip about Paris Baguette. As if I need an excuse to visit a bakery. LOL I will definitely seek out their version of the Cronut. 😉
