Piggish for Tea
I am piggish for tea after trying samples of Teapigs.
I mean, you just gotta love the name right off the bat, right?
Plus, you have to smile at a tea company that has a sense of humor. Its Chamomile tea has a drawing of an easy chair on the package, while its Chili Chai is decorated with an image of a fire extinguisher.
The company is called Teapigs because the the founders are greedy for great teas. Get it?
On top of that, the company, which started in the United Kingdom in 2006 and opened a New York branch last year, works with the communities from where it sources tea to try to improve them in some way. Case in point, it’s now helping raise money for the Noel Orphanage in Rwanda, which is located in the same region where Teapigs produces its English Breakfast blend.
Of course, the real question is how does the tea taste?
Rather than a paper tea bag, these come in a pyramid-shaped mesh bag (or “temple” as the company refers to it), which allows the whole leaves to actually unfurl as they steep, providing a lot more flavor.
The teas I tried all had a wonderful purity without any muddled or artificial taste.
I’m partial to the Lemon and Ginger, because I am an admitted ginger fanatic. It’s a blend of ginger, lemongrass, lemon peel and licorice root. It’s soothing and relaxing, and would make an ideal pick-me-up if you’re feeling at all under the weather.
The Spiced Winter Red tea is rooibas blended with orange peel, whole cloves, cinnamon pieces and ginseng root. It will make you think of mulled wine — without the booze.
The Licorice and Peppermint is quite unique. It has a burst of minty freshness wrapped around assertive anise. It is quite licorice-y, and almost medicinal tasting.
A box of 15 biodegradable tea temples or bags is $9.99. They’re available on the company’s web site and on Amazon.com.
Teapigs? Love the name! And I love tea — am drinking some right now, as a matter of fact. I’ll have to try some of the wares from Teapigs — they sound both fun and tasty. Thanks.
Sounds like a great company working for great causes. I’d try it!
A lot of the flavors you tried seem to be herbal teas. Is that their my line? Or do they actually have other black tea with infused flavors?
Ben: Nope, they offer all kinds of teas. Click onto their site, and you’ll find black teas, green teas, and even matcha.
What a cute name for a tea company!
Love the chamomile flowers! Great idea to put whole flower in the bag. Can’t believe no one does this. Also the bags are such high quality, must be German made. Very little of the flower comes out of the bag when I give it my shake test! Ordering more.
