A World of Coffee Through Atlas
Atlas Coffee Club wants to navigate your taste buds along a global journey through coffee.
The coffee club procures coffee beans from around various countries, and not just the usual suspects, but places like Indonesia and Burundi.
About 50 percent of the offerings are fair-trade certified. All of the coffee is grown with sustainable farming practices. The coffee is shipped right after it is roasted. A 12-ounce bag of coffee ($14, plus $3.95 in shipping costs) is delivered every two weeks or four weeks, each time from a different country. You can also choose whole beans or ground coffee, and how light or dark you want the beans roasted. And if you find a variety of beans you can’t get enough of, you can opt to have that type sent to you regularly.
Recently, I had a chance to try out a sample shipment.
I received a bag of Rwanda Nyamagabe, which is probably the first time I’ve ever had single-origin coffee from that country.
Although this particular varietal didn’t sport it, the other coffee selections come packed in a nifty bag that’s printed with a custom textile resembling African or Indonesian fabric. Each bag arrives with a postcard with factoids about the country the beans are from. In this case, I learned that Rwanda is known as “the land of a thousand hills,” and that its coffee farms had been neglected for many years but are now making a comeback. There’s also a helpful card printed with brewing tips and flavor notes.
I admit I’m usually a French roast kind of gal, so the Rwanda beans were much blonder in appearance, having a lighter roast than what I’m used to.
I used the French press method, not only because that was what was recommended but because it’s my usual go-to routine in the morning.
The result was a smooth, carefree cup of joe, not as joltingly strong or deeply rich as my usual French roast. Instead, it was a gentler sip with a nice caramel note to it.
It’s definitely a fun way to explore coffee regions you haven’t tried before.
This is so great! I love the fact that they ship it right after it’s roasted and you have the option of shipping it bi-monthly or monthly.
