Crunching on Crunchies
You have to love a “processed” snack food that has only one ingredient in the bag. What a rarity, right?
Crunchies is exactly that — freeze-dried fruit and veggies that have nothing added to them. They’re non-GMO verified, gluten-free certified, vegan, kosher, halal, and contain no added sugar or artificial flavoring. The produce is picked, then frozen before being freeze-dried. leaving it dry, light as air and crunchy.
And they’re pretty darn delicious, too, as I found out when I had a chance to try some samples.
Crunchies come in 10 different varieties. Nine are fruits — everything from pineapple to cinnamon apples. The remaining one? Beets, of all things. I love roasted beets to begin with. These freeze-dried ones have all the subtle sweetness and earthiness you expect of beets, but also a wonderful crunchiness. Plus, the beet chips are beautiful to behold with their purple-burgundy hue and rough-hewn texture. They’re delicious eaten out of hand, but could even be tossed into a green salad or used as a chip to dunk into a thin dip or sauce.
The mango ones look almost like potato wedges, and taste tropical with a recognizable musky note. And the mixed fruit bag offers strawberries, blueberries, bananas and apples, affording a different taste in every bite.
Again, these can be enjoyed out of hand. But the fruit ones also could be used to add texture and flavor to cookies or pancakes.
Best yet, there is zero fat and cholesterol in Crunchies. A typical serving of 1/3 cup has about 40 calories, depending upon the variety.
Tuck a resealable 1.2-ounce bag in your gym tote, purse, desk drawer, car or carry-on suitcase for those times when you need a crunchy pick-me-up.
Crunchies are available at CVS and Walmart stores for about $5 per bag.
Really interesting. I haven’t heard of these, but like the idea. The beet one really appeals to me, too. Used to hate beets when I was a kid, but now I can’t get enough of them. Fun review — thanks.
Hmmm, interesting. Wonder if the crunch make people want salt sprinkled on them? Does the beets make your fingertips red?
Oooh. more snack options for me. 🙂
I love the texture of freeze-dried fruits…they are so crisp and light…I have to give these a try Carolyn…
I hope you are enjoying your week 🙂
Ben: Nope, the beets are freeze-dried with nothing on them, so they will not tint your fingers when you pick them up.
