Plant-Based Scrambled Eggs
It looks all the world like scrambled eggs.
But in reality, it’s the new Hodo Vegan All-Day Egg Scramble.
It’s the newest product from the Oakland-based purveyor of artisan tofu.
The plant-based product is made with organic soybeans, with turmeric giving it the eggy color.
It boasts as much protein as a real chicken egg and no cholesterol.
I had a chance to try a sample recently. The ready-to-use scramble can be used as is or heated in a frying pan or microwave.
It’s fairly compacted in its pouch, but just use a fork to break it up more into soft, slightly fluffy curds.
It certainly looks like eggs. But the taste is definitely beany like soybeans. The turmeric, cumin, onion powder, and garlic powder give it a faint Indian curry-like character.
It’s delicious and handy to have in the fridge to whip up burritos, sandwiches, and fried rice on the fly.
An 8-ounce package (2.5 servings with 110 calories per serving) is $8.99 at Whole Foods, Target, and Walmart.
Interesting! Haven’t heard of this particular product. I’ve been playing a bit with some of the veggie “meat” products, and haven’t been all that impressed. They’re not bad, just not something I’d want to eat instead of meat (and I don’t eat all that much meat to begin with). Anyway, this looks interesting — have to check it out. Thanks!
