Get Saucy With New Hodo Tofu & Sauce
Always inventing and reinventing, Oakland’s Hodo Foods has debuted a new line of fully cooked tofu & sauce packages that are sure to make meal prep a whole lot easier and faster.
Made with the company’s organic tofu, these convenient, refrigerated kits come in three varieties: Korean BBQ, Japanese Curry, and Thai Red Curry.
I had a chance to try samples of the latter two. Each comes with a package of extra-firm tofu along with two packets of sauce.
The tofu is not a solid brick, but rather a clump that has been vacuum-sealed. So, unless you take the time to actually use a knife to cut it into bite-size pieces, your dish will not look exactly like the photos on the packages that show the tofu in nice neat bite-sized cubes. If precise pieces are not paramount, just use your fingers to easily crumble the tofu instead.
Although you can microwave the tofu to warm through, it pays to take the extra minute to saute them in a frying pan on the stovetop or to bake them in an air-fryer. That way, you get wonderful crispy edges on the tofu.
Once they are warmed, just add the contents of the sauce packets, and stir to combine. The sauce will reduce slightly, coating the tofu crumbles almost like a glaze.
Serve over rice, farro, barley, quinoa, noodles or cauliflower “rice.” Or over sauteed or roasted veggies. Or even use as a filling for a baked russet or sweet potato. I love them as a quick and nutritious lunch.
The teriyaki tofu has a delicious sticky sauce that tastes of caramelized sweetness and tamari saltiness. The red curry tofu, made with coconut cream, is earthy, a touch sweet, and a tad spicy.
Each kit says it serves 3, but I think it’s more like 2 unless you really build up your grain bowl with a lot of other ingredients.
Each 5 ounce serving as 170 calories for the teriyaki kit and 200 calories for the red curry one. The teriyaki kit has 5 grams of total fat, 270 milligrams of sodium, and 17 grams of protein per serving; while the red curry one has 10 grams of total fat, 420 milligrams of sodium, and 17 grams of protein per serving. Both have 320 milligrams of calcium and zero cholesterol.
What’s more, they’re both vegan, non-GMO, , gluten-free, and certified kosher.
Find them at Whole Foods, Good Eggs, Misfits & Imperfect Foods for $9.49 to $9.99 for each 16-ounce package.
