When it comes to snacks, I do love a good, crunchy pretzel.

And Uncle Jerry’s Handmade Pennsylvania Dutch Pretzels are definitely some of the best around.

Founded by Jerry Skolnick in 1988 in Lancaster, PA, it took only two years for his family-owned business to win a “Best of Philly” award, the first time that honor had ever been given to pretzels.

His youngest daughter Misty joined the fold in 2008 to help launch the company’s e-commerce sales. And lucky me was fortunate enough to receive some samples recently.

These pretzels are made with a sourdough starter. The dough is rolled and kneaded rather than extruded under pressure from huge machines, and the pretzels are hand-twisted. They are made without oil, sugar or preservatives.

Uncle Jerry’s makes a wide range of pretzel products, including low salt ones. The regular salt pretzels are fat, thick and about the size of your palm. You’ll definitely hear and feel the crunch when you bite down with your molars. The taste is malty, yeasty, toasty, and a little tangy like sourdough bread.

If you like your pretzels extra crunchy, go for the Extra Dark pretzels with their deep mahogany color. These are as crunchy as croutons, and taste extremely toasty.

Not surprisingly, the best sellers are the chocolate-covered ones. The milk chocolate one, of course, is sweeter and creamier tasting than the dark chocolate one, which has a richer, more complex taste. Both have a touch of salt to balance out their sweetness.

For true chocolate lovers, there’s the Dark Chocolate Pretzel Bark that’s like a candy bar with big chunks of broken pretzels throughout.

Both the Milk or Dark Chocolate Caramel Pretzel Bites taste like a more artisan Twix bar with their crunchy, sticky, chewy deliciousness.

One plain pretzel has 80 calories, 360mg sodium, and no fat or cholesterol.

The pretzels sell for $12.99 (8-ounces of Dark Chocolate Pretzel Bark) to $25.50 (3-pound bag of regular or extra dark pretzels).

And like all great snacks, it’s definitely hard to stop at just one.
